Podcast Notes & Other Helpful Bits

1. John 4:24: “God is Spirit.”

2. Since God is Spirit, we know He is:

   1. Immaterial - He’s not made up of matter or material like humans are. Spiritual beings are not made up of anything we can see or touch. God is immaterial.

   2. Invisible - God didn’t make humans in such a way that we can see immaterial/spiritual beings. So, since God is Spirit and immaterial, we can’t see Him; He’s invisible.

   3. Hidden/Veiled to humans - Since God is Spirit and invisible and we can’t see or touch Him, we would have absolutely no way of knowing anything about Him unless He decided to tell us about Himself, or “reveal” Himself.
      

3. God did reveal Himself. God has made Himself known.
   We talked about two ways He’s done this:

   1. General Revelation

   2. Special Revelation

   3. From R.C. Sproul: “God has removed the veil that hides Himself from us, by means of revelation.”
      

4. GENERAL REVELATION

   1. It’s important to note that I didn’t cover everything about general revelation in this podcast. I’ll go over some things a little more thoroughly another time when we’re talking specifically about general revelation alone (and we’ll talk about “natural revelation” and other types of revelation too).

   2. One way God chose to reveal Himself to us was through creation—the things He’s made. Everything we find in creation tells us something about who God is, what He’s like, and what He’s done. We call this type of revelation “general revelation.”

   3. We call it “general” for two reasons:

      1. it’s given to everyone

      2. the content of it is general (a general knowledge of God), not specific

      3. So you can look out into space and God see that God is infinite and wise and powerful—but you can’t get specific information, like the story of the life, death, and resurrection of Christ.

      4. See Romans 1:19-20:
         "For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.”

5. SPECIAL REVELATION

   1. Another way God chose to reveal Himself to us was to inspire human authors to write the Scriptures we find in the Bible.

   2. From R.C. Sproul:

      “[it’s] the revelation God gives that not everybody in the world has the opportunity yet to receive… It’s the information that God gives to us principally through sacred Scripture…and information that we could never glean from nature.”

   3. If you have access to special revelation (the revelation about God found in the Scriptures), understand that God has removed barriers from your path in order to get that to you.

   4. ***At one point near the end of the podcast I noticed I said “it’s available to all of us all of the time.” I should add that I meant it’s available to all of us who have access to Scripture—not all of us in the world. :)
